THE NEW NIAGARA

Niagara Falls has long been the mecca of honeymooners —as well as thousands of perfectly normal wanderers. But the well-remembered scene will never be the same again since the crashing of a huge slice of rock last winter (1932). Many unusual and lovely shots illustrate the new coastline. The actual roar of the falls, recorded from the deck of the “Maid of the Mist” which pushes it’s nose up to the very foot of the cataract, gives this subject an added novelty.

CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

(SPORT CHAT) Wrestling has recently arisen to a premier position in the sporting world. CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING discusses many of the fine points of the “grunt and groan” artists. Wrestling, as it is practised by world champions, is indeed a spectacular sport. Jim Londos, “the golden Greek”, and George Zaharias, the “arch-villain of the mat”, are the principals. The match took place at the Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, before a crowd of 17,000, Londos winning out in straight falls after a thrilling match.

GREY OWL’S LITTLE BROTHER

A lost, baby beaver is found by Canada’s famous Indian naturalist, Grey Owl. Sheltered and fed through babyhood by his human friend, the little animal is reluctant to return to his own people. But, when he does, Grey Owl is adopted by the entire beaver tribe. A flap of his paddle on the water, a whistle in the woods and the shy creatures hurry to him, confident of his friendship. In GREY OWL’S LITTLE BROTHER, Grey Owl himself, plays with his friends and reenacts the finding of the little orphan who became for him the ‘open sesame’ to Beaverland. GREY OWL’S STRANGE GUESTS

X

How would you like a beaver-lodge inside your home? Beavers would seem strange guests to us. But the late Grey Owl, the soldier-Indian, appreciated the honour “Little Brother”, paid him when he moved in for the winter. The Beaver’s working-day, his night shift, his quiet lunch-hour and his unexpected sense of humour make GREY OWL’S STRANGE GUESTS a story with human interest as well as a delightful insight into life in Beaverland. RHAPSODY IN TWO LANGUAGES

The story of a day in Canada’s Metropolis…Montreal from dawn to dawn…City of Contrasts…pulsing life of a great metropolis…quaintness of an old-world town…it’s modern…it’s old…it’s gay…it’s pensive…it’s – Montreal! RHAPSODY IN TWO LANGUAGES is a delightful little adventure in the Rhapsodic Technique. We hold the pulse of the great city as it reluctantly wakes in the morning to the tune of countless alarm clocks…it hurries to work; and reaches its climax in the gayety of the evening. We arrive home just in time to say “good morning to the milkman. And—it’s another day. Fonds/collection: ASSOCIATED SCREEN NEWS LTD. Accession: 1957-0001.

As the years slip by we do not realize the changes time makes in things all around us. Priceless records from the vaults of Associated Screen News allow us to look way back into 1922 and see things as they really were those few short years ago. Many famous people and incidents flash across the screen, such as Baron and Lady Byng, Mary Pickford, Sir Henry Thornton, the great Haileybury fire, the latest thing in bathing suits on Vancouver’s beaches, even a glimpse of a Canadian feature movie release way back in ‘22. SKY FISHING

Wherever it is, fishing is always fishing—one of the dearest adventures to the heart of man. But when he climbs five thousand feet toward the clouds and finds there a shadowy alpine lake teeming with trout, something very odd happens to the heart-beat of even the most hardened angler. Perhaps it’s only caused by the high altitude. Or perhaps it is the majestic beauty of the scenery. More probably it is from the realization that five thousand feet up in the Canadian Rockies brings one not only to the lovely shores of Maligne Lake, but very close to Fisherman’s Heaven. And who can resist a hungry look as the frying pan does its pleasant duty beneath the shadow of some rugged mountain peak? Fonds/collection: ASSOCIATED SCREEN NEWS LTD. Accession: 1973-0127.

RETURN OF THE BUFFALO

For many years the merciless guns of the white man brought terror and death to the buffalo. Great herds were decimated until the monarch of the plains faced total extinction. Railroads crossed his once-free range. Ta;; cities rose to the skies from his feeding grounds. In all the West there was no room for him. Then a tract of land was set aside as a sanctuary and the herds came back. A dramatic, swift-moving story of the shaggy beasts of the prairie, of Indians and covered wagons, of death through man’s greed, of the growth of the West and the RETURN OF THE BUFFALO in new-found security to the lands of his ancestors.

Priceless records in the vaults of Associated Screen News allow us to lift the curtains of time and see what changes the years can accomplish—see what was happening “way back in ‘23.” Feminine fashions are certainly not what they used to be! And so a Montreal fashion show is included. 1923 brought many famous visitors to our shores, some of them since then having gone on the journey whence there is no return. Your audience will enjoy renewing acquaintance withRudolph Valentino and his bride; Lloyd George; “Lord Renfrew” (who was really the Prince of Wales); Sir Baden Powell, chief and founder of the Boy Scouts; and others. 1923 was also the year of two famous contests, one to find “Canada’ Loveliest Child” and the other to choose “Miss Canada”. DID YOU KNOW THAT? NO. 1

“It’s a queer old world we live in where very often things are not what they seem and the truth is stranger than fiction”. When motorists drive down a certain hill in New Brunswick, they are forced to step on the gas, but going up, they can coast to the top. There’s a town in British Columbia with enough buildings to house four thousand people yet one man lives there alone. Ever hear of a religion which forbids its adherents to drive automobiles? There is one. Yes, indeed, there are strange things in this strange world and Canada has her share of old facts. DID YOU KNOW THAT? Fonds/collection: ASSOCIATED SCREEN NEWS LTD.

THE GAME IS UP

X

(SPORT CHAT) A sport of kings and mountain-goats is alpine climbing. But where even the goat refuses to trust his sure-footedness, man stubbornly clambers on. THE GAME IS UP is the screen story of a climb in which every moment makes you hold your breath. Thousands of feet below—a sheer drop—are the haunts of man. Away above is victory. And, hanging on by tooth and nail—crampon and ice-pick, the mountain-climbers wriggle and claw their way cloud-wards. Majestic Mount Tupper, in the Canadian Rockies, is the exciting conquest in THE GAME IS UP.

PICKING LOCKS

Locks mean one thing to a burglar and something else to men who go in for wrestling. But our sort of locks are the kind that get boats over bumps in the water. We cruise from one lock to another, through big locks and little locks, and finally find ourselves stepping across the great lock system of the Welland Canal – over Niagara, the biggest water-bump of them all. Burglars get caught and wrestlers get hurt but there are no regrets PICKING LOCKS our way, for Canada’s nautical staircases make a fascinating cruise. Fonds/collection: ASSOCIATED SCREEN NEWS LTD. BACK IN ‘14

A page from actual history which will stir the memories of thousands of Canadians. It is a vivid portrayal of the transition between the first and last halves of the year 1914, in which a country at peace is transformed into a nation of warriors. It shows revealing glimpses of the life and people and the work that was being done…like digging the Welland Canal, the Hamilton Highway. Then came August 3rd, and Canadians are seen recruiting, being drilled and trained in the grim business of war, and leaving for France. It is a picture of a year that few of that generation will ever forget. CITY OF TOWERS

Towers reaching skyward…towers honouring the memory of the fallen heroes…guarding the quiet haunts of university life…pointing slim fingers heavenward to the glory of God…testifying to the achievements of Big Business…guiding the deliberations of Ontario’s law-makers…these are the skyline of Toronto, Canada’s City of Towers. And just as towers seem to dominate every phase of Toronto’s busy life, so CITY OF TOWERS finds in them a striking medium for portraying the highlights of Ontario’s metropolis. VANCOUVER VIGNETTE

X

Vancouver, born from the wilderness little less than a hundred years ago, gazes proudly from Canada’s western coast over the blue Pacific. Today, ships of every nationality drop anchor in her harbour. Cosmopolitan, bustling, the fast tempo of her commerce, her race tracks and crowded beaches contrast with the cloistered quiet of her University. VANCOUVER VIGNETTE highlights the vivid personality of Canada’s third city.

The most famous policemen in the world are the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Linked with the history of the Dominion’s outposts, are the courage and endurance of these upholders of law and order in far places. But Mounties don’t just happen. Behind their tradition of accomplishing what they set out to do, stands a long and strenuous training. Just how strenuous exacting it is, is the story of MAKING MOUNTIES. POINT OF HONOUR

X

(SPORT CHAT) “Sir, I shall send you my seconds,” said the Georgian gentleman who followed an intricate technique to satisfy his honour. But the cave man was not so subtle. He simply sharpened his stick and waded in. The Roman soldier fought the Greek arrow and javelin with a short stubby sword, while the knight in armour carried one six feet long. Today it is against the law to settle a POINT OF HONOUR with the sword but duelling through the centuries forms a romantic background for the thrilling sport of fencing. Do you believe that the truth is stranger than fiction? Well, how about nature’s open-air bath where the water is always hot even when the air is below zero? Or the grave in London, Ontario which might be that of a daughter of George IV? Or the barge which has defied mighty Niagara for thirty years? Or the opera house where the stage is in Canada and most of the audience sit in the U.S.A.? This intriguing, ten-minute short is another in the collection of hard-to-believe, yet perfectly true, stories gathered from across the Dominion. Fonds/collection: ASSOCIATED SCREEN NEWS LTD.
