Canadian Government Arctic Expedition of 1924

This documentary was produced by the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau (CGMPB) to document the federal government’s efforts to establish a permanent presence in the High Arctic. During the Government Arctic Expeditions (1922–1924), Captain Joseph-Elzéar Bernier and the CGS Arctic made frequent stops in Greenland, specifically at Etah and Godhavn (now Qeqertarsuaq). These visits were not for exploration of the Greenlandic interior, but served critical strategic and diplomatic purposes for the Canadian government.

In the early 1920s, there were concerns in Ottawa regarding potential Danish challenges to Canadian claims in the High Arctic. Regular stops in Greenland allowed Canadian officials to monitor Danish activities and maintain a presence in the region.

Greenlandic ports served as essential jumping-off points for the Eastern Arctic Patrol. The Arctic would stop to take on fresh water, coal, and supplies before heading further north to establish RCMP posts on Ellesmere and Devon Islands.

Capt. Bernier and the expedition leaders met with Danish governors and local administrators. These interactions were meant to foster cooperation while subtly asserting that the waters the Arctic patrolled were under Canadian jurisdiction.

On board this day was cinematograher, Roy Tash, hired by the Canadian government to document the voyage of the CGS Arctic. Tash continued documenting the Arctic throughout his career. In 1956, he shot footage for the film Arctic Journey, which recorded Governor General Vincent Massey’s tour of the north for Associated Screen News.

Glimpses of Greenland, and other Canadian Government sponsored films, serve as historical records as proof of long-standing Canadian and Danish administration in the Arctic, countering modern claims that the territory is “undefended” or up for sale.
